683. Kilcock

Located on the Grand Canal, Kilcock has a fine parish church and convent in Victorian Gothic style. The town's library features mementos of the poet Teresa Braydon who was born at Kilbrook. The old bog road, 4.5km west of the town, was the subject of her most successful verse. Bridestream, an 18th century house, has a rare-breed farm open to the public.

684. Kilcullen

Four miles (6 km) south of Droichead Nua is the little town of Kilcullen beside the River Liffey. Nearby at New Abbey is the Portlester tomb, which carries sculptured effigies of the fifteenth-century Baron Portlester and his wife. At Old Kilcullen, 2 miles (3 km) to the south, are the remains of a round tower and three ninth-century figured high crosses in granite; the west cross has panels of figured scenes. Also near Kilcullen is Dun Ailinne ( now Knockaulin), once a residence of Leinster kings.

685. Kildare

Kildare, on the opposite edge of the Curragh plain to Droichead Nua, is the centre of Ireland's horse-breeding and training industry. St Brigid founded a religious established here in the fifth century, and St Brigid's Cathedral (Church of Ireland) is a beautiful building incorporating part of a thirteenth-century structure and a tenth-century round tower. Kill, Kildare, Ireland

686. Kill

An attractive village which has been successful in the National Tidy Towns competitions. A large earthen enclosure on Kill Hill and a motte behind the main street recall the area's ancient past. Kill has been identified as the burial place of the Kings of Leinster. Nearby was born John Devoy (1842-1928), Fenian and patriot. At Goff's Kildare Paddocks, located on one side of the dual carriageway, major bloodstock sales are held as well as international snooker and exhibitions. Over half of all Irish bred horses are sold here.

687. Kilteel

In the village is a 15th century tower and gateway of the castle of the Knight's Hospitallers. Nearby are the remains of a church with fragments of a 12th century Romanesque arch decorated with unusual male heads and biblical figures. National monuments.
